This evening I will be voting to pass the Domestic Abuse Bill through the House of Commons , with major changes to protect victims of abuse.
It's been welcomed as a 'landmark moment for survivors' and includes legal recognition for the first time that children who witness abuse in their home are also victims who need support, as well as the end to perpetrators being able to say their victim was 'asking for it' as a defence for physical harm.
In summary:
give victims of Domestic Abuse priority housing
create a statutory definition for Domestic Abuse
reform family courts
end the ‘rough sex’ defence
