Jonathan Gullis has launched a petition urging the Council to stop using the Sneyd Arms to house the homeless. This central location, opposite the town hall and underground market, is not an appropriate site.
Coincidentally, there has been a spike of crime, including vandalism and theft, in the area which is upsetting the community. Jonathan has been made aware of this issue in emails and conversations with local residents.
So far, Staffordshire police have made two arrests in relation to theft and damages on Tunstall High Street.
The Council are sending a clear message to their residents by using this central location to house rough sleepers. It undermines Jonathan’s commitment to making our streets safer through increased CCTV and street lighting.
Working with local Councillor Tabrese Din, Jonathan Gullis believes there must be an alternative location to the Sneyd Arms in Tunstall town centre.
The Council has also failed to comment in response to a freedom of information request that seeks to find out just how many people are being housed here and from what date, so far Tunstall residents are being kept in the dark.
Commenting Jonathan Gullis said: “The Council should not be housing the homeless in the Sneyd Arms. It’s right in front of the historic market and town hall which is the focal point of the community.”
“My petition pressures the Council to find better accommodation to house the homeless that does not impact the high street”
