Jonathan Gullis joined the founder of FairFuelUK to present a 126,000-strong petition to the Chancellor ahead of next week’s Budget.
The petition calls on the Government to freeze fuel duty rates and keep the cut at the Budget.
Eight former Cabinet Ministers, including Prit Patel and Suella Braverman, are among signatories which will put pressure on the Chancellor to keep rates down for the fourteenth consecutive year. They say that the threat of a 5p hike in fuel duty is “hanging over motorists” this year. They go on to argue that “it would be catastrophic for British motorists is fuel duty rises in line with inflation.”
Gullis led a successful campaign at last year’s Budget where the Chancellor personally thanked him for backing British motorists.
Commenting, Jonathan Gullis MP said: “Last year, the Chancellor and I worked together to allow the Conservative Party to continue to champion British motorists. From the tradesperson getting out to make an honest wage to the parent dropping kids from A to B, it’s essential the Chancellor does not punish people getting out and about.”
“In areas like Stoke-on-Trent North, Kidsgrove and Talke, pro-driver policies, like the Prime Minister’s pragmatic decision to push back our net-zero targets, are popular with voters. In this year’s Budget, the Chancellor needs to do the same and help drive growth in our country’s great industrial towns and cities and rural heartlands.”
Commenting, Howard Cox, Chair of FairFuel UK said: “Deep down, the Treasury knows full well that motorists are a major solution to alleviating the chronic cost of living crisis and should not be treated as perennial cash cows. Time to give drivers more than a moral break, and recognise they already pay way too much in charges and taxes, and do what is financially right for the economy and cut fuel duty BIG.”
