So far 11 million people and jobs have been supported through the job retention and self-employment schemes.
The scheme will come to an end in October, winding down flexibly and gradually.
However today the Chancellor has announced that if an employer brings back an employee who was furloughed, and continuously employ them through to January 2021, then the goverenr will pay a £1,000 bonus per employee.
The employee must be laid at least £520 on average, each month, from November 2020 to the end of January 2021.
That means if all 9 million furloughed staff in the job retention scheme come back and stay employed until January 2021, it will cost the government £9 billion.
